Painting the Lips of Myth
by
Lee Gurga and Gary LeBel
Modern Haiku Press, 2026
(6.75" x 9.5"), perfectbound
Poet-painter E.E. Cummings once wrote that his “two arts love each other dearly.” Something like that magnetic attraction certainly informs this fascinating book. Lee Gurga’s haiku and Gary LeBel’s haiga love each other dearly, too. ... Visually evoking the moods and metaphors of Gurga’s haiku, LeBel creates an ekphrastic magic between word and image, thought and feeling. He calls forth what calligrapher and haiga artist Ion Codrescu has called the “real universe hidden in the words.”
Much more might be said about the poet’s wit and the painter’s wink; or the masked personas evoked by word and image; or the sheer breadth of artistic display across representational and non-representational modes of expression, perfectly balanced by the poetic command of contemporary and avant-garde form and purpose in haiku. I will leave to other reader-viewers, however, the pleasure of discovering just how far the poems and the pictures range across what is personal, cultural, and/or existential. I will leave it to them, too, to feast, as I have, on the fascinating interplay of poem and picture, haiku poet and haiga artist, throughout this captivating book.
