Those Nights

When I wake with leg cramps, my mother rubs my legs up and down until I can go to sleep. Widowed for many years, she is used to me jumping in bed with her on those long nights. I fall asleep trying to match my breathing to hers.

I know there are night spirits who take children away and never give them back.
