reviewed by Lee Gurga

The New Pond: An English-language Haiku Anthology, edited and translated by Emiko Miyashita (Tokyo: Hokumeisha, 2002). In Japanese, with haiku in English. 128 pages, 6" x 7I", perfectbound. ISBN 4-89448-319-X. $18.00 from Brooks Books, 3720 Woodridge Dr., Decatur, IL 62526; or <http://www.family-net.net/ ~brooksbooks/newpond.html>.

A collection of twelve columns that originally appeared in Haiku kai (Haiku World), the leading national haiku monthly in Japan. Each of the first eleven columns present ten haiku in English and Japanese translation by poets from a particular geographical area in the West. Columns are included on several groups throughout the U.S. as well as Canada and the United Kingdom. The last column presents haiku and tanka about September 11. There is also an epilogue that details the author’s haiku travels, illustrated with photographs of haiku poets throughout the world. While all the introductory essays but one are in Japanese, the editor promises translations of the essays to those who order the book. An interesting anthology of English-language haiku from the Japanese perspective.
